6. Psychosocial Connections

Lowy, Jill. "Looking Inside Pandora's Box." Looking Inside Pandora's Box. N.p., n.d. Web. 24 Nov. 2015. <http://www.themystica.com/mystica/articles/l/looking_inside_pandora's_box.html>.

In this article Lowy compares the greek myth of Pandora's box to feminism. In Pandora's box, and any other story I have used in this project, the projection of all the horrible things (greed, violence, disease, etc.) have always been the fault of a girl. Whether it's Pandora, Ophelia, Eve or one of the many other characters from stories that could relate to this, it is always a girl that brings on the bad things humanity has to deal with. These stories came from or were set in a time when women were not anywhere near the social status of men, and I think that we are just now within the 2010 decade getting to the point where it is close to becoming equal. Pandora's box can be used as an example to show how far we've come as a society with feminism. We have gone from women always being the ones that cause the problems to more women graduating from college than men (Lowy).

5. Artwork- Pandora

Redon, Odilon. "National Gallery of Art." Pandora's Box. National Gallery of Art, Chester Dale Collection, n.d. Web. 24 Nov. 2015. <http://www.nga.gov/content/ngaweb/education/teachers/lessons-activities/origin-myths/pandora.html>.

This is a painting by Odilon Redon from somewhere around 1910-1912. Redon was a French painter during the impressionist period. There are many painting and pieces of art that portray Pandora and her box, but this one is different because it focuses on Pandora and her curiosity of what is in the box. Most art pieces focus on the things she let out of the box and the aftermath of the situation, while this one focuses on before she opened the box and how interested she is in it. All of the colors and shapes are bright and happy, showing that the things inside the box have not yet been unleashed on the world (Redon). This relates to the original myth for obvious reasons, it is the same story, but I think it is almost better because it focuses on how good life was before Pandora opened the box. The story, like most artwork after this piece, focus mostly on the bad things that occurred after she opened the box.

4. Movie- Pan's Labyrinth

"Pan's Labyrinth Synopsis." IMDb. IMDb.com, n.d. Web. 24 Nov. 2015. <http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0457430/synopsis?ref_=ttpl_ql_3>.

Pan's Labyrinth is a movie about a little girl named Ophelia. Only one part of this movie truly relates to the myth of pandora's box, but I think it is a strong connection. This movie is about a little girl named Ophelia who is greeted by a mythical creature in a labyrinth and he gives her three tasks she must complete. He tells her she is the princess of the underworld and that if she completes these tasks she will be able to claim her throne. The part of the story that relates to Pandora's box is during the second task when she goes to retrieve a golden dagger. There is a terrible monster down there, but the Faun tells Ophelia she will be okay as long as she does not eat the fruit. When Ophelia is doing the task, however, she eats some of the fruit from the monster's table causing the monster to wake up and chase her. She escapes, but this is very closely related to Pandora's box. Just like Pandora, Ophelia was tempted with something she was explicitly told by a supernatural figure not to eat (or open, in Pandora's case) and she did it anyways (Pan's Labyrinth Synopsis). Ophelia didn't release plague upon the human race, but she did get the fairies that were with her killed and awake a horrible monster that had been asleep for many years because of temptation.

3. Song- Pandora's Box by Procol Harum

Procol Harum. "Pandora's Box (1975)." YouTube. YouTube, 09 Jan. 2009. Web. 24 Nov. 2015. <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZlFPmHaXO9E>.

This song is not about the releasing of all the horrible plagues on mankind, but it is more about the horrible plagues on mankind. The song never talks about where these things come from or why they came to be, which is really what the Pandora's Box myth is about. Instead it just discusses (vaguely, as most songs do) the issues that are created by all the plagues put on mankind such as misery, disease, greed, etc. One part of the song says "And like some pirate sailor; We crossed the Spanish Main; And brought our magic carpet; To a marble staircased plain" (Procol Harum). To me this part directly speaks about how Europeans came over to America and destroyed all the lives that were already here. This would be something that was caused by Pandora opening the box, as are all the other things that are discussed in the song.

2. Short story- Adam and Eve

Coleman, Jennifer. "Pandora & Eve." Pandora & Eve. Blogger, 07 Oct. 2010. Web. 24 Nov. 2015. <http://pandoraandeve.blogspot.com/>.

This article does a very good job of comparing Eve from the bible story Adam and Eve and Pandora from Pandora's box. The story of Adam and Eve says that long ago Adam and Eve lived in the Garden of Eden and everything was absolutely perfect, and it would remain that way as long as they did not eat the forbidden fruit from the tree of knowledge as God instructed them to do. A serpent ends up tricking Eve into eating an apple from the tree of knowledge, and as a result the world is forever plagued with sadness, despair and all the horrible things that Pandora also unleashed on the world. There are many similarities in the the two women from these stories, such as that they are both supposed to be the first woman created and they were created to accompany man. However, obviously the main focus in similarity is the fact that they give in to temptation and as a result the world is imperfect. They both gave into temptation that resulted in unleashing despair, sadness, death, disease, poverty, etc. on the world (Coleman).

1. Original Myth- Pandora's Box

"The Myth of Pandora’s Box." Greek Myths Greek Mythology. Προώθηση Ιστοσελίδων SEO by Artkreta.GR, Mar. 2010. Web. 24 Nov. 2015. <http://www.greekmyths-greekmythology.com/pandoras-box-myth/>.

Pandora's box is originally a greek myth. This myth is used to explain all the horrible things that happen in the world. The story says that two human brothers, Epimetheus and Prometheus, angered the God Zeus so he decided to play a trick on them to punish him. Zeus, along with the help of Athena, Hephaestos, Hermes and Aphrodite, created a woman named Pandora and sent her to Epimetheus and Prometheus. Epimetheus was charmed by Pandora and agreed to marry her. Zeus gave Pandora a small box as a wedding gift and told her not to open it under any circumstances. Eventually Pandora gets too curious, as Zeus planned, and opens the box. Inside the box are all the horrible things that plague the world, therefore when Pandora opened the box poverty, death, disease, sadness, misery, etc., came pouring out. By the time she shut the box there was only one thing left in it, so she decided to let it out and it was hope. This myth/archetype is used to explain why all the bad things that happen in the world happen, but also show that there is hope that follows them (The Myth of Pandora's box).
