Pandora's box is originally a greek myth. This myth is used to explain all the horrible things that happen in the world. The story says that two human brothers, Epimetheus and Prometheus, angered the God Zeus so he decided to play a trick on them to punish him. Zeus, along with the help of Athena, Hephaestos, Hermes and Aphrodite, created a woman named Pandora and sent her to Epimetheus and Prometheus. Epimetheus was charmed by Pandora and agreed to marry her. Zeus gave Pandora a small box as a wedding gift and told her not to open it under any circumstances. Eventually Pandora gets too curious, as Zeus planned, and opens the box. Inside the box are all the horrible things that plague the world, therefore when Pandora opened the box poverty, death, disease, sadness, misery, etc., came pouring out. By the time she shut the box there was only one thing left in it, so she decided to let it out and it was hope. This myth/archetype is used to explain why all the bad things that happen in the world happen, but also show that there is hope that follows them (The Myth of Pandora's box).
